With one of the most distinctive and recognizable voices in contemporary music, six-time Grammy award-winning artist Toni Braxton rose to fame as one of R&B's most successful singers during the mid-'90s with a series of hits including "Breathe Again," "Another Sad Love Song," "You Mean the World to Me," and the chart-topping "Un-Break My Heart." Since these hits, her star has continued to rise. With an impressive catalog of five albums (alongside 2003’s best-selling Ultimate Collection), she has built a worldwide base of music lovers since she first burst onto the scene.
Braxton was diagnosed with heart disease in her early 30s, making it an issue quite literally close to her heart. “I was actually performing in the Broadway show Aida about four years ago and I was changing costumes, about to do my big number before intermission, when I started feeling really lightheaded. I didn't know what was wrong with me,” said Braxton. “The doctor educated me and told me that I had rubbing pericarditis, which is when the lining of your heart becomes inflamed and it contracts. I had no idea of any of the symptoms. I simply attributed it to having childhood asthma. Since then, I’ve realized how important of a role prevention plays in heart health and that you need to eat a healthy diet and lead a healthy and active lifestyle.”
Despite her brush with heart disease, Braxton has not slowed down. She has continued to star in Broadway productions, released new albums and has recently extended the run of her Las Vegas spectacle Revealed, through 2008. Revealed chronicles Toni’s illustrious career and has been playing to sold-out audiences at the world-famous Flamingo Hotel and Casino since it began in August of 2006.
Braxton is currently in the midst of recording her new album, which is expected to be released around the Spring of 2008.
She currently lives in Las Vegas with her husband, music producer Keri Lewis, and their two sons.
